What Are Stem Cells

What are Stem Cells ?

Stem cells create and repair all the different cell types in our bodies (i.e. blood, muscle, organ & skin cells etc).
Once in the body, they are transported through the bloodstream to the part of the body where they are required. Here they differentiate into specialised cell types to help replace damaged or diseased cells.
An example of a Stem Cell which is used in modern medicine is a bone marrow cell – currently used to treat Leukaemia and other Cancers.

A cord blood stem cell:

  • can create bone marrow cells as well as other cell types;
  • is easier to match to patients than bone marrow;
  • can be cryo-preserved for years rather than days;
  • can be available for transplant within 24 hours;
  • has a much lower chance of rejection after transplant

Another benefit is the sheer quantity of stem cells present in the umbilical cord in comparison to bone marrow. The umbilical cord has one of the richest quantities of stem cells present in the body.
These are just some of the reasons why Cord Blood is quickly becoming the transplant of choice within the medical field.

Umbilical cord stem cells

At Stemology, we organise collection & storage of the stem cells found in the umbilical cord at birth. These stem cells could help protect your baby’s health for the rest of their life.
Umbilical cord stem cells are easy and safe to collect; and can be safely stored to treat life-threatening conditions in the future.
Stored cells can be used to treat your new-born baby and can match siblings and other family members too.
